About
About
Dùsgadh Baile na Cille is a community-led Isle of Lewis art gallery and cultural centre located in Uig on the west coast of the island.
Our vision is to reawaken the historic Baile na Cille church and transform it into a vibrant, inclusive space where creativity can flourish and people can come together. Here, you’ll discover the very best of local art, music, poetry, and the rich cultural heritage of the Western Isles.
Though our setting is remote, our outlook is outward-looking and contemporary. We present work that is thoughtful, relevant, and rooted in place – reflecting the energy, imagination, and talent of artists and communities across the islands.

Culture & Heritage
Baile na Cille has long been a place of sanctuary, its name thought to mean “the township of the church” or “the farm by the church.” With accounts suggesting there have been chapels or churches here for over a thousand years, the site holds deep roots in the story of Uig.
Visitors are invited to explore this rich history through a collection of local books that share stories of times past, alongside a historian’s booklet dedicated to Baile na Cille Church.
For centuries, Uig itself was one of the most remote parts of the Isle of Lewis, accessible mainly by boat until as late as the 1940s. This sense of remoteness shaped the lives, traditions, and resilience of the community, leaving a legacy that continues to inspire today.
At Dùsgadh, we celebrate this heritage while creating a space where culture is not only remembered but lived, connecting past and present for both the community and visitors alike.
Gaelic language
Gaelic is woven into the history and daily life of Uig, shaping stories, songs, and traditions passed down through generations. At Baile na Cille, we celebrate Gaelic as a living language and an essential part of our cultural identity.
religion
Faith has played a central role in Uig for centuries, with Baile na Cille standing as a place of worship and gathering for generations. Its religious heritage remains an important and respected thread in the story of the community.

More than a gallery, this is a space for people to meet, reflect, and engage. Whether browsing quietly, attending an event, or taking part in a workshop, visitors are invited to connect with art, ideas, and one another.
Showcasing Local Talent
We are proud to highlight the work of artists from across the Isle of Lewis and the wider Western Isles. Each exhibition reflects the unique voices of our community, rooted in place yet open to the world.
